Accidents at Work PDF Print E-mail

Injuries in the work place can range from injuries from machinery to bullying and to repetitive strains.

Harassment & Bullying

Employers owe a high standard of care to their employees. The Employment Equality Acts 1998-2008 place an obligation on all employers in Ireland to prevent harassment in the workplace.

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 employers have a duty to ensure the health and safety of their employees in the workplace. In particualar an employer must “prevent any improper conduct or behaviour likely to put the safety, health and welfare of employees at risk”.

Injuries

Employees may suffer from:

  • Cuts and falls
  • Manual handling injuries
  • Repetitive strain Injuries
  • Plant, Machinery and farm accidents
  • Construction accidents
  • Absence of appropriate training
  • Exposure to hazardous materials
  • Psychological injuries from bullying and abuse

It is important for an employer to ensure they have adequate safety statements, and that they enforce them. It is also vital that they provide adequate safety equipment where necessary. Should an employee be injured in the course of their employment they may be compensated if it can be shown that the accident was the fault of someone else – the employer, the system of work, or a fellow employee.
